Thank you much for the question!

In 2019 we had pretty much completely fallen out of fandom spaces online, not really engaging in reading fanfic, art or discussion. Rather, we were pretty much only interested in the fictionkin side of tumblr.

However, Jas (😼🔪) was searching for art of one of his kintypes– a low profile character without many fans– and ended up running into the blog of a selfshipper who was obsessed with that kintype character.

This was the first time that we’d been exposed to the self ship community, and didn’t really “get” it at the time. We ended up following the self shipper and occasionally sending them asks, etc, always on anon– we didn’t want to get too involved or be creepy or weird.

Unfortunately, that self shipper disappeared in the middle of 2020, and we never saw them again. But meeting them and getting to know the self ship community through them inspired us to get back into fandom in general– and into self shipping.
