working on a longer version of that Phoenix serial killer AU. It’s slow going but…
—
Miles had been sleeping fitfully. He always did on the night of an investigation– the night before a trial– but it was worse than usual tonight. He didn’t like the picture that the evidence was starting to paint. Of course, that had been the case before, there were plenty of times where the evidence seemed to suggest one killer, but the truth had been far different. Hell– it had happened to Miles himself. But this time something about it made him uneasy, and he tossed and turned in his bed.
The clock read just past two in the morning when Miles heard the soft click, and the shuffling, scuffling sound. When it woke him from his shallow slumber, at first he thought it had been only in the fitful dream he’d been having.
But there it was again. That shuffling noise.
Footsteps.
