Are there any other types of “coding” or is it just queer coding? I know “minor coding” isn’t a thing but what about the other types that people claim to be real?
Queer coding exists because queer relationships and characters were (and to some degree in some places still are) considered too taboo and too illegal by society to portray directly in fiction.
If there are other types of coding that legitimately exist then it would be because they are *also* considered too taboo and illegal by society to be portrayed in fiction outside of using coded subtext.
You could probably make an argument for “incest coded” and “pedophile coded” characters and relationships to exist.
(ward against bad faith readings: I am not saying it would be a good thing for them to exist.)
