The whole acting like fictional characters have free will thing really takes me back to when I was into a certain band, which I don’t wanna name, around 2016/2017. For context, the members of this band are all drawn, fictional characters. I remember, one time, people were discussing if their guitarist was being oversexualized with some of the outfits she would wear. I saw a lot people say shit like “she’s a grown woman, she can wear what she wants!” Except she can’t tho! She’s a drawing, she is pixels on a screen, she actually can’t wear whatever she wants because she isn’t real. She doesn’t have the free will to choose what to wear. It’s all up to the bands artist to decide that. And only like a handful of people pointed that out too.
Yeah, people acting like characters are the ones with the agency, and not the authors is a significant problem all sides of discourse.
