What’s your favourite thing about writing whump? Is there a particular scenario you love to write?
I love this question. Thank you so much <3
My favorite thing about writing whump– favorite whump scenario in general– is the exploration of violence as an inherently corrupting force.
The concept that violence will always make a person worse, no matter what.
–That committing violence always taints us.
–That suffering violence always leaves us worse than we were.
–That witnessing violence always takes something away from us.
That no amount of violence will ever make a person better.
Violence can be necessary. Violence can improve the world at large. It can be pleasurable. It can be satisfying.
But it will never, ever make us whole. It will never make someone more than they were before.
It will always take something away from someone who commits it, or someone who suffers it, from someone who sees it happen.
No amount of committing violence, suffering violence, or witnessing violence will ever make a person kinder, more sane, or more moral.
Violence is a corrupting force that numbs a person, makes them weaker, while it makes them more dependent on it, makes them enjoy it.
It’s seductive, it’s easy, its fun.
The part of whump that I love is the inherent corruption and inescapable tragedy of violence on all sides.
