Hello! I wanted to know how I can differentiate constructive criticism with destructive ones, specially when involves the depiction of certain elementsFor example, let’s just say that my story involves sexual assault, but it’s not depicted in a bad light or, at least, it’s showed in a good one, and then someone sees that and says that they didn’t like it and explains why. Even if it’s just their opinion, does this count as a constructive or destructive?Another example, let’s just say that I wrote a character that is stereotype of a certain group, and then someone doesn’t like that and explains why that is a bad thing. Is that a constructive or destructive one?(Sorry for that detailed examples, I just wanted some clarifiction)
Good/constructive critique is critique that helps you strengthen your story by making it better as the story that YOU want to tell.
Any critique you receive that tells you that you should change the story in ways that take away from your idea in order to make the story more acceptable or more enjoyable to the person who is criticizing it, is not good criticism.
👍 Good critique helps the writer make the story more the story that the writer wants to tell.
👎Bad critique demands that the story be changed for the reader’s benefit.
Please note that this is specific to feedback aimed at telling the writer how to improve their writing, which is different from media analysis, review, etc which is aimed at understanding the fiction, not at changing it.
