The trouble with fiction is that you can’t just do a comprehensive list of all the ingredients like you can for allergen info on food. Just like anything can be an allergen, anything can be a trigger, but fiction isn’t easy to break down into its composite parts so you can warn for literally everything that it contains on the off chance someone might be triggered by it. I and a lot of other fic writers tend to just warn for the most obvious things, the stuff that gets included in age ratings for published fiction. We can’t catch absolutely everything, and especially when a writer’s catalogue is mostly “dead dove” anyway, there’s a point where warning for that kind of thing becomes redundant. Like, “you’re telling me this mature-rated horror story has gore in it?” Being triggered sucks, but it’s one of those things you have to live with and learn to deal with in ways that work best for you. Saying it’s every writer’s responsibility to tag all triggers is ignorant of how triggers work at best and entitled at worst. Sure, I can warn for things like gore, sex, or even abuse situations. But what if one of my characters’ NAMES is a trigger? What if a line of dialogue I think is perfectly innocent drags up bad memories for someone else? And hell, what if someone misinterprets something I wrote to be triggering (say, confuses a friendly dynamic as abusive, or misreads a word as a slur?) I can do some things to mitigate the risk, yes, but readers getting triggered by my writing is still very much out of my hands. (And let’s not forget readers who see warnings for their triggers and continue reading anyway either out of a compulsion to self-harm or just sheer overwhelming curiosity)Conclusion: Trigger warning is damage control, not defusing a story entirely, and it’s far from foolproof. Not putting warnings on your story does not make you evil or selfish.

It is a lot of effort, anon, sure pressing the archive buttons on ao3 is simple. But, for example, one of my friends has a huge phobia of grasshoppers. Not everyone is going to know that insects and grasshoppers can trigger her or anyone else, and therefore wouldn’t tag it. Or to what extent a tw is needed. It’s just not possible for me to go through every little thing in my fic with a finetooth comb to find everything that can trigger someone. Sure, if someone asks you to tag something, it’s politeness to do so. But it’s not a requirement. The block button is right there.

I really want to enjoy whump content because it’s exactly the kind of stuff that appeals to me, but I have a problem with the way whump blogs tend to flood mental illness related tags and make it really hard to find actual posts discussing disorders and symptoms, like for example I rarely bother with the touch aversion tag anymore because I won’t find posts about being touch averse, I’ll find whump posts that paint touch aversion as something tragic and angsty that can be ‘fixed’ by the right person, and it’s kind of left a bad taste in my mouth. I do really want to enjoy the posts, I just wish they’d stay out of the tags that people use to discuss their conditions and symptoms.

the thing about antis basically wanting to sterilize Ao3 and removing like incest and underage stuff is it isn’t going to actually STOP anyone from posting it there. People are just going to stop tagging it. I remember in ye olde days when ffnet banned smut, people still posted it, you just didn’t know it until you were slapped in the face with a surprise wiener when you weren’t expecting it. which imo is worse. i want my wiener warning

I fucking hate people who are like “you shouldn’t put this in the main tags” because I block the main tags of fandoms or medias I don’t like. If my mutuals post about those fandoms and don’t main tag it, I’m gonna see it and have to filter smaller tags which’ll make it harder to filter out all of it(was just scrolling thru ur blog and saw all the people yelling at you for astro boy lol)
